The Science Behind CarbonicHeat Multi-Floor Film

Energy Efficient underfloor heating

The design of CarbonicHeat™ MultiFloor film is based on the radiant transfer of infrared heat directly into objects and bodies. It is a more efficient warming method than forced air or indirect convection. The US Department of Energy says this about radiant heat "Radiant heating has a number of advantages: it is more efficient than baseboard heating and usually more efficient than forced-air heating because no energy is lost through ducts." The CarbonicHeat™ MultiFloor film takes this to the next level by generating "distributed heat" as opposed to "concentrated heat" that other systems rely on. The result is a consistently warm floor, no matter how large the room. For heating large rooms, or even your entire home, CarbonicHeat™ MultiFloor film is more cost effective than any other underfloor heating system.

How CarbonicHeat™ MultiFloor film works

CarbonicHeat™ MultiFloor film the is constructed of two sheets of tough polyethylene plastic which sandwich a layer of resistive carbon. Copper “bus bars” run the length of the product and are the primary electrical conductors. Electricity flows between the bus bars, passing through the resistive carbon layer. The resistive carbon produces far infrared heat. An adhering layer, a non woven mat of PET plastic (a type of polyethylene) is thermally bonded to the exterior of the film. This provides excellent bonding to adhesives and thin set cement.

CarbonicHeat™ film can be thought of as a continuous array of resistors (the resistive carbon), connected in parallel by the copper bus bars. As the length of a sheet of material increases, the total resistance decreases and the current increases.

The CarbonicHeat™ film is supplied in a roll. It can be field cut to length, as well as cut to half the width, in order to accommodate the layout of a given installation. Additional sheets can be added to cover an entire floor surface. They are all wired together in parallel using the factory supplied Harnesses as part of the Heating Panel Set.

Each installation uses a Dual Input Thermostat, which provides control from both a floor sensor and from the ambient air temperature.
